Tell me why!

The time has come for another 'Tell me why' problem.

Can you tell me why deserts are hot in the day and cold at night?

I will post the answer next week.

  1. The main reason why is because there is no water in the desert. No water in the ground means that the ground cannot absorb the heat in the day so there there is no water vapor in the air. Dry air means it is very cold at night. In the daytime all the heat from the sun makes the ground very hot very quickly, because there is no water in the soil for the heat to evaporate.

  2. The deserts are hot in the day and cold at night because in the day they are close to the equator and in the night they are above the equator and that is the anserw.

maybe if the sun is hot it will make the desert hot
if its night theirs no sun just moon so if there's no
sun the sea will get cold

    I think

I think the mantle makes it hot

  5. Clouds play a main part in this topic, as it control the weather passing. In the desserts, as there are no clouds, the heat of the sun directly falls on the ground, its hot in the day and when the heat starts evaporating into space, it gets colder soon.

  6. hot: During the day, the sun burns up the sand which then soaks up the heat
cold: during the night however, with the sun gone and the sand is not so hot as it was in the day, the night is colder

  7. When it is cold at night theres no sun which makes it cold. When it's warm theres sun and makes it hotter. I think that when theres no water in the deserts it gets hotter as well.

  8. The temperature in the desert during the day is hot because there are no clouds to stop the sun from heating up the air. At night when the sun goes down and there are no clouds the hot air rises up to space the air in the desert turns cold.

  9. Dear Miss Joliffe,

Find below the answer for the tell me why question.

Why are deserts hot in the day and cold at night?

Well, since there are absolutely 0% clouds in the desert, it allows more of the sun’s rays to reach the desert. This might be shocking to hear, but I will tell you. Did you know that without the sun’s rays, the desert would have been colder than the United Kingdom! Anyway all the sun’s rays make an impact on the ground beneath it. They get hotter and hotter. The ground soon spreads the heat along the desert. That is why in deserts it is so hot during daytime.

When the sun sets, the heat in the ground slowly cools down and again, since there are no clouds, all the heat radiates back into outer space leaving cold air. That’s why desserts are very cold at night time.

  10. Dear Miss Jolliffe,

    Here is my answer.

Deserts have very high diurnal temperatures, which can be blazing, but at night, the temperatures can plummet to near freezing. Here is the explanation.

Cloud cover, and moisture or humidity in the atmosphere, act as insulators of heat. They absorb and block out some of the incoming heat from the sun during the day before it reaches the ground, and help to retain some of the heat escaping from the ground during the night. However, as there is no or very little cloud or humidity in a desert, all the solar heat during the day gets absorbed directly into the ground, making the temperatures rise very high. After sunset, all the heat from the ground gets radiated back into the atmosphere, as there is hardly any cloud or humidity to reflect it back to the earth, making the temperatures plunge during night-time.

The reasons behind the lack of cloud and humidity in a desert are:

    • There are very few water bodies and very little ground water in a desert, meaning the water cycle is minimal, and there is very little evaporation into the air.

    • The vegetation in a desert is very scarce, so there is very little transpiration. The only plants are cacti et cetera, which have no or very small leaves, and hence do not release much moisture through transpiration.

  11. It is hot during day time because the sun makes it hot and it is closer to the equator. It is cold at night because it is far from the equator.

  12. Hot: It is hot in the day because the sun is hitting directly onto the Earth and there is no water in the desert so there is no water to colden the sand.
Cold:it is cold in the night because the sun is further away from that part of the Earth and the moon is there so the oon gives the desert cold and takes away the heat.

those are my opinions of why the desert is hot in the day and cold in the night.

  13. You have all thought about this very hard and tried to link in your knowledge of other subjects. Welldone.

As promised, here is my simple explanation:

Deserts are very hot and dry in the day because the sun beats down through clear skies, making the temperature rise.
At night, there are no clouds to stop the heat from the ground escaping, so the desert becomes very cold and sometimes even frosty!

  14. it's hot because if it rains it's wet and you can have rain in the night because the sand is cold. Tonyann
