Poetic Features

This week in Literacy we have been writing and editing our own Extreme Environment shape poems. Our class have written a range of shape poems about icebergs, snowflakes, polar bears and penguins. Here is an example we came up with. What features can you spot?

                                                  A

                                               giant

                                         icy iceberg is

                                       as delicate as icicles.

                             Slippery pieces sliding down

                                       the iceberg and cracking

                                open under the grey,

                                                dirty

                                              water.

  1. Dear Miss Jollife,
Here are the features that I spotted.

This shape poem is in the shape of the subject (iceberg) and describes it as well.
It is very descriptive and uses many good adjectives.
It uses a simile (as delicate as an icicle).
    It uses alliteration (icy iceberg).
It uses a powerful verb (sliding).
    It uses onomatopoeia (cracking).

  2. Dear Miss Jolliffe
Here are the features I found,

The first feature is that the poem is in the shape of what it is about, that is the first one I spotted.
It contains alliteration such as slippery and sliding / icy iceberg.
It uses onomatopoeia, cracking. It also had a powerful verb which is sliding.
It has adjectives like giant, dirty etc., and I think the reader will really like this wonderful poem. Finally it includes a simile which is as delicate as icicles.

I can also really imagine that this poem was written in the cold frosty days of winter or originating from a extreme environment like the poles
