Tell me why!

I was pondering my next post to you all and wanted to make it something that you could do a little thinking about and research before posting your findings.

You, like me, enjoy asking interesting questions. With that in mind, my next few posts are going to ask you to 'Tell me why!'.

Think very hard about the questions, then use a search engine, like Kidzilla, to do some research. Write up your findings in your own words and comment on the post. It needs to be in full sentences but doesn't have to be very long.

I will leave you an answer to the question before I post the next interesting question.

Why do clouds float if they have lots of water in them?

  1. The water and the ice particle in the clouds we see are simply too small to feel the effects of gravity. As a result clouds appear to float in air.

  2. Clouds float when they have lots of water because water droplets are small and light. They also float because the air in the cloud is warmer than the outside air. Siddharth

  3. The speed with which an object falls under gravity depends on its mass (amount of matter) and surface area. The water droplet and ice crystals forming the cloud are too small, only a few microns (one thousandth of a millimetre), so they have very little mass, and hence very low fall speeds. They are easily held off and even driven upwards by rising air currents, so they seem to be floating. However, when the water particles grow in size, they gain enough mass (compared to their surface area) to fall to Earth - that is when precipitation occurs...ISHAAN

  4. A cloud is made up of water droplets. A cloud is formed when the air is heated up by the sun. As it rises, it cools as it reaches fullness the water cant cant come out. This forms a cloud. As long as the cloud and the air that its made up of is warmer than the outside air around it, it floats. Sidney.

  5. The water particles (or if cold enough, ice crystals) in the clouds, are too small to see with our own eyes. The water droplets are so small and light that the gravity doesn't effect it. When there are lots of tiny water particles in the cloud, precipitation happens. Prisha

  6. These contributions are fantastic! As promised, here is my short explanation...

Clouds contain tiny droplets of water, which are so light they float on the air, just like pieces of dust do in a ray of sunlight. So, even though clouds can hold lots of water, the tiny droplets aren't heavy enough to fall, meaning they hang suspended in the air.

Look out for the next 'Tell me why!' coming soon...

  7. A cloud is a large collection of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air. When the cloud becomes heavy and grey we get rains.
