The Romans

I have been so impressed with the quality of your Roman projects. You have clearly done lots of research.

For your post this week, I would like you to tell me about the most interesting Roman fact you have learnt about.

I can't wait to hear them!

  1. The most interesting fact that I have learnt about the Romans is this:
Roman soldiers were expected to walk 20 miles each and every day, carrying all their food and tents. When I first read about it, I thought I had mistaken it for 2 miles, but then I read it again and found out it actually was 20 miles! I have walked a mile before on the trip to to the River Thames and Teddington Lock, so I'm pretty sure I know how exhausting 20 miles is.

I would also like to share something else: Roman children would wear a special charm called a 'bulla', and they believed it kept evil spirits away. Boys took it off when they were citizens and girls took it off when they got married.

  3. I found two interesting facts:
    1. The Romans used to bury dead people along the roads out of town. They did this so the ghosts couldn't find their way home to scare people.
    2. Rich Romans enjoyed eating Edible Dormice that they would roast and dip in honey.

  4. An interesting fact I have learnt about from the Romans

    Gladiators
People didn't have computers, television or phones over 2000 years ago
therefore they had live entertainment that was a competition that included gladiators and animals. It was an interesting fact to learn about because we do not have it in our era.

It's fascinating that slaves trained all there lives to die. In these days it would be illegal to have gladiators and fighting. Gladiators had no rights because they were slaves. It's fascinating that where were 4 types of gladiators(retarius, thracian, murmillo, samnite).

  6. The most interesting Roman fact that I have learnt about is the clever technology of aqueducts that they introduced to the world.

Over 2,000 years ago, the Romans devised an ingenious method of supplying water to the city and carrying out the sewage - the first ever aqueducts! Before the development of the aqueduct technology, Romans, like most of the others living in the ancient world, relied on local water sources such as springs and streams, along with groundwater from wells, and seasonal rainwater.

However the Romans changed that by building a total of nine aqueducts planted within Rome, in various locations, which carried 222 million gallons of water into the city per day. These supplied water to public baths, latrines, fountains and private households. Waste water was removed by complex sewage systems and released into nearby bodies of water, thereby keeping the town clean. Aqueducts also provided water for mining operations, milling, farms and gardens. In Rome, there were special administrators who would monitor their cleanliness and ensure fair supply.

Most Roman aqueducts proved reliable, and durable; some were maintained into the early modern era, and a few are still partly in use.

  7. Amazing Roman Fact file
I felt like all of the facts are interesting and couldn’t stop with one...

Would you like to know all about the Romans? Well I have written all about it.

    • Did you know that harsh Gladiator fights happen in the Coliseum, one of the famous landmarks of the world? Let me tell you how Gladiator fights work. If one of the gladiators loose. The person who lost will have to allow the other Gladiator to kill him.

    • Another thing, Roman used Mosaics to decorate their stuff.

    • Did you know that poor Romans ate porridge with salad while the rich had luxurious meals like geese legs, chicken and large quantities of wine, no wonder the poor lived longer than the rich

    • Another thing, the romans wrote numbers in a different way, for example they wrote one - thousand as M. Below are a few more Roman Numerals

    1 2 3 4 5 50 100 500 1000

    I II III IV V L C D M

    • Final point, all of the romans wore a small kilt. Boys wore a longer kilt while girls wore a smaller one. Rich romans also wore a Tonga, a large drape. Only the Emperor could wear a special Tonga. The emperor’s Tonga was nicely prepared with purple dye. Only the Emperor had the privilege to wear a purple dyed Tonga because it was very expensive

  8. The interesting fact I have learnt about the Romans is they made mosaics. They used hundreds of small pieces of colourful stones to make a picture. The Romans used the mosics for different things such as decoration, signs and for walking on,they made lovely pictures and patterns which some can still be seen today in the British Museum. The city of Pompeii was buried under lava in 79AD had well preserved mosaics because of the layers of volcanic ash that covered them.

  9. The interesting thing that I learnt about the romans is that in the Roman army there was an officer called a standard bearer. The Standard Bearer, or Signifier, held a staff with a standard, or ensign, on top. Standards and ensigns were symbols that could mean different things. The word 'bearer' means that he bears the standard staff and that is used for directing the soldiers in battles. The Standard Bearer would wear bear or wolf skins over his uniform and helmet.

  10. The most interesting fact that I learnt about Romans is how they got the city got its name and how they built their city. The twin boys Romulus and Regas born to Mars (the god of war) were taken away by their uncle. Their uncle threw them in river. Later they were found on land where a wolf fed them and looked after them. When they grew up they built the city and thus it got its name.
The Romans were very good with building work. They had invented cement and thus they could built bigger buildings and walls.
