Tell me why!

Another 'Tell me why!' problem this week. You will need to carry out a little research to find the answer but make sure you write up your findings in your own words.

Here it is...

Why does a compass always point north?

I'll post an answer next week.

Happy blogging! :-)

  1. from manan.A magnet will always point North, because the earth is like a magnet and
therefore it will attract the compass needle to the Northpole .In fact, if you go to the south of the Equator and quite close to the southpole, the needle will still point North.
the actual cause of the magnetism, has to do with the interior[the earth's core] wich, is filled with iron core.i hoped your AMAZED with my homework.

  2. A compass always points north because the Earth is like a magnet and attracts the needle. It points to the Magnetic North Pole.
The Earth is like a magnet because the core inside the Earth is made out of iron and iron is magnetic.

  3. A magnet is a piece of metal that is electrically charged and it has two poles at each end. When two magnets are put together the poles that have the same charge push away from each other but the poles with the opposite charge pull towards each other. A compass needle always points north because Earth is a magnet and the biggest magnetic strength is at the North and South Poles. The needle in a compass is a magnet too and the tip of the needle is pulled towards the North Pole.

  4. The Earth is basically a giant magnet with a core made of liquid iron, which acts like a bar magnet running through the middle of the planet. The top end of the earth’s magnetic field, that is, the ‘Magnetic North Pole’ is very close to, but not quite at the same place, as the ‘Geographic North Pole’ (the North Pole we see in the maps). Similarly, the ‘Magnetic South Pole’ is very close to the ‘Geographic South Pole’.

A compass is a lightweight magnetised needle on a free rotating pivot. Since opposite poles of magnets attract (and like poles repel), the south pole of the compass needle is always attracted to the Earth’s ‘Magnetic North Pole’ - hence a compass always points north.

  5. A compass always points north because it contains a magnet in the needle and this is attracted to a powerful magnetic force that exits in the northern part of the Earth. The actual magnetism has to do with the interior of the Earth which is filled with iron core,

  6. A compass always points north because in that pointy red bit there is a strong magnet. It is attracted to a macnetic force so powerful it can attract any compass like magnet from probebly anywhere the planet the magnet is on.You may be wondering what is this magnet? it is based on a probebly indistructible iron core in the interior of the earth.

Also a very low population of people mostly the young ones from 1-5 belive that it points north because home is always north.I am not very shure about this but it could be true.
I used to belive it when I was 5.

That is my opinion on why a compass always points north bye !

  7. A compass always points north because of magnetism. The needle on a compass is a small magnet and planet Earth is a very, very big magnet. Earth's magnetism is caused by the iron core in the middle of the planet and the greater magnetic pull is at the north. Some geophysicists think that the north and south poles may swap sometime in the next few thousand years.

  8. Why does a compass always point north?

Well, Earth is a big magnet. The magnetic flux (the lines of force of a magnet) of Earth goes from South to North. The magnets in Earth have the same magnetic flux.

A compass always point north because the compass is made from a magnet, which has a North and a South. If a north and a north come close, they will repel. On the other hand, if North and south come close, they will make a magnetic field. It’s the same with the Compass. It always points to the magnetic South (the North Pole of the Earth). That is why a compass always points north.

The magnetic south is actually the true north and the magnetic North is actually the true south. The magnetic north is approximately 1,000 miles from the true north. Since the Earth is tilted, the distance between the magnetic south and the true south is a bit different compared to the magnetic north and the real north.

  9. Why does the compass always point north

A compass always points north because of the Earth`s magnet.

  10. Compass needle is a small magnet, which are set up in parallel from the Earth's magnetic field lines. As a result of the magnet repel and attract differenf. Nedle are set up its southern part towar the north land.

  11. It always points north because of the Earths magnetic field whic attracts the needle north.

  12. It always points north because of the Earths magnetic field which makes the needle face north wise.

A compass is used for navigation. Navigation means directions when you are on a journey using north, south, east and west. A compass is shaped as a circle and is made of metal and has a magnetic needle which always points north. A compass shows you where north, south, east and west should be. The needle alway points north as there is a magnetic field in the Earth's core.

  14. No matter which way you spin,a compass needle will always point north. It knows where to point because the needle is a magnet. Magnets are pulled toward other magnets, and there is a huge magnet located inside the earth that is pulling the compass needle. The huge magnet is the Earth!

  15. We had a chat about this problem in class today. My simple explanation is below:

Did you know that the Earth is like a giant magnet? Deep in the centre is a solid core made from iron. This spins in a layer of liquid metal and creates magnetic fields around the Earth. A compass has a needle that is also magnetic and is always attracted to the Earth's magnetic north. Handy for explorers around the world!

  16. A compass will always point north no matter where you are. It will always point north because of the Earth 's magnetic field which is in the Earth 's core and it 's made out of iron. Handy for explorers around the world!
